Chakra Balancing Yoga In Sanskrit, the word “chakra” means “disk” or “wheel” and refers to the energy centers in your body. These wheels or disks of spinning energy each correspond to certain nerve bundles and major organs. To function at their best, your chakras need to stay open, or balanced. If they get blocked, you may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra.
In these classes, as in a regular practice, we will flow through a sequence of poses, but each week we will concentrate on a specific Chakra so that imbalances can be addressed. So you are encouraged to attend all the classes in the series as it is difficult to know where your imbalance occurs, but you will still benefit from individual classes if your time is limited. Sometimes we start at the base and move upwards; other times we observe changes in the Universe and target specific chakras accordingly.
We will use yoga poses as well as sound, mudras, pranayama and visualization to focus on one chakra each week. Yoga asana are designed and practiced to cultivate stillness and observation of the breath. Asana are chosen which help unblock a specific chakra and improve energy flow in that area.
As we progress from the lower chakras toward the upper chakras, our focus will shift from active strengthening poses at the Base Chakra toward quiet, restorative poses and meditation at the Crown Chakra.
As the chakras become balanced Prana flows freely through the body: the mind and the body gradually become steady and quiet so we can function more effectively.
Many of the other classes concentrate on a specific chakra as part of the flow.
